News from New York State

Recently the State of New York, Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has adopted regulations targeted at the dental community. These newly adopted regulations will require most dentists that place or remove dental amalgam to install ISO 11143 compliant dental amalgam separators. On May 12, 2006 these new regulations become effective.

The regulations are gradual and immediate depending on weather the clinic is established or just opening its doors. All established practices will have two years to install this equipment and must have a qualified amalgam separator installed by May 12, 2008. New clinics and dental practices must have a qualified amalgam separator installed before opening for business.

All amalgam separators installed after May 12, 2006 must be proven to meet a minimum removal efficiency of 99% by weight for amalgam. All Rebec models have been verified for sale in the Minnesota MCES service area as meeting the 99% removal efficiency criteria and are available for sale in the State of New York. MCES was one of the first programs to require a 99% removal efficiency for this equipment and Rebec has designed all equipment to meet this high efficiency for this and other more restrictive markets.

In addition, the these new regulations require that all amalgam separators in New York must be properly sized for the volume and flow of the dental facility amalgam wastewater in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and recommendations. Rebec amalgam separators incorporate a surge tank design and flow restricting device to accommodate nearly every dental clinic volume and flow situation. Amalgam separators not equipped with flow restrictors have the capacity to exceed flow requirements during routine vacuum line flushing and cleaning procedures.

These regulations add to the earlier mandate by NYSDEC requiring all dentists in New York to recycle dental amalgam waste. Rebec offers a program in compliance with NYSDEC regulations to assist the dental office with the recycle of scrap amalgam, chair side traps, and pump filters. This service is available through your local dental dealer and is called the Rebec SAP program. Rebec offers a collection bucket and shipping protocol for this waste in 1, 3 ½, and 5 gallon sizes. All waste collected through this program is recycled through a federally%2
